OneNess is an actress, performance poet, writer director and producer. She has been performing since the age of 8 years. With her unique captivating talents she has delved into stage, television and film.
OneNess has been creatively documenting her experiences (or insperiences as she likes to refer to them) from a very early age and in 1999 she decided to combine her performance skills with her writing, blurring the distinction between truth and art; and between education and entertainment.
As a BA Honours Degree Graduate in Performing Arts she has been further developing her skills and fruitfully pursuing her career as a performer and theatre practitioner. Her talents include directing and producing theatre, teaching theatre practices, acting and performance poetry/spoken word. Her recent work includes directing a cast of 16 performers in a new musical entitled ‘Misrepresented People’, co-produced by herself on behalf of the Nottingham Playhouse.
OneNess has a diverse artistic life. In recent years she has given powerful acting performances in the productions such as Modern Amazons at The Birmingham Repertoire Theatre; shared with Mica Paris, Terri Walker, Swiss, Black Twang, Dead Prez & many more familiar names and has performed in many venues from schools to theatres to concert arenas nationally and internationally ranging from Atlanta in the USA to, Norway’s Afrikan History Week festival. She was nominated for Best Black female poet of 2005 by Black Women in the Arts and was hailed in the New Nation Newspaper as being one of the top 5 poets of 2005.
OneNess has appeared on BBC radio 4 series bespoken word and played Brenda in Angie Le Mar’s Choice FM radio series ‘The Brothers’. She has also hosted and appeared on TV channels such as BEN TV, BBC Midlands and Oslo TV (Norway).
As a member of London’s finest poetry collective the ‘Best Kept Secret’, OneNess became the first person out side of the USA to win a prize at The Toronto International Poetry Slam, whilst the collective were on tour in Canada. She was awarded third place
As well as developing as a performance artist she is constantly involved in supporting her community for the betterment and empowerment of her people. This includes work with women’s groups, liberation campaigns, progressive grass root organisations, student activism and so on. She states that her aim is “to aspire to live and travel beyond the words she speaks and she prays that she will be brave enough to walk the path that the ancestors have laid before her.”
